I don’t understand the inner workings of Rails well enough to jump  
into the
technical discussion of components. However, Rails has not satisfied my
requirement for Portal style web pages and I was highly disappointed  
that
components are on their way out.

A guy named Sebastian Delmont, gave a quick 5 minute talk about his
embedded action plugin. I’m not sure how much this applies to what you
guys are talking about, but it seems related. Some info is here:

I found that link via google, so that might not be the official release.
